Nasa's Space Shuttle Mission STS-125, after a successful launch just after 1801 UT on 11 May 2009. This is an exciting mission in many ways: not just because of the fact that the Shuttle will be in its highest orbit since 2001, but morever, because NASA has, if the mission is successful, arguably endorsed one of its most significant prominent remote space probes until its final decommissioning in 2014. Originally slated to fold sometime in 2009/2010, NASA has seen fit to continue the upgrade path of the Hubble Space Telescope. The New Wide Field Camera 3, to replace the WFPC2, will open up new depths for astronomers, and combined with an additional spectrograph much more sensitive than its existing equivalent, astronomers worldwide will benefit from the new science data for many years to come. NASA should be commended for its decision to allow the upgrade to go ahead. This will make the Hubble SPpace telescope a flagship 'product' for many days to come.
